Pursuing higher education has become the top priority for youths in Taiwan, with up to 97.55% choosing to study instead of enter the world of work.

The vast majority of local people aged between 15 and 24 have expressed their willingness to seek university or higher educational diplomas, according to findings of a survey conducted in 2009 by the Cabinet-level Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS).

The percentage was higher than the corresponding figure recorded in 2001 by 10.62 percentage points.

The ratio of those youths who obtain a master degree surged by 11.85 percentage points in the past eight years, the DGBAS poll showed.

DGBAS officials attributed the high ratio of young people willing to pursue university or high education partly to the increasingly easy admission to local universities or colleges.

DGBAS tallies showed that as of the end of 2009, there were a total of 3.042 million people aged 15-24 in Taiwan, and up to 72.02 percent of the youths still retained student status, sharply up 12.3 percentage points from the previous survey done in 2001.

Meanwhile, only 19.63 percent of local young people joined the local labor market as of 2009, down 8.36 percentage points from 2001.

The survey showed that there were still around 254,000 young people in the 15-24 age group neither studying at schools nor joining the job market.

The same DGBAS survey also found that 19.42 percent of males aged 15-24 spent their leisure time at Internet cafes, playing online games or accessing BBS stations, compared to the corresponding figure of 9.54 percent for females in the same age group.

The poll also found that up to 93.84 percent of local young people regularly surf the Internet, with males mainly searching for information or to play online games and females to browse information or make friends.

Meanwhile, 30.7 percent of the polled youths expressed worries about their family's finances. The average pocket money young people have reached around NT$150 per day or NT$4,545 per month, mostly given by their parents.

Up to 57.44 percent of those polled felt worried by something in their daily life, with 69.24 percent concerned about study-related problems, and 36.34 percent by relationship problems.
