Singaporeans set record for most number of Cola fountains

HAVE you ever tried popping a Mentos candy into your Cola and watched in amazement as the soda shot upwards like a geyser?

How about seeing 1,430 Cola fountains appearing all at once?

Students, teachers and parents gathered at Punggol Secondary on Aug 6 to set the first mark in the Singapore Book of Records with 1,430 simultaneous Cola and Mentos geysers.

The activity is a key highlight of the Singapore Science Festival 2010 (SSF 2010), and is also a unique way for the students to celebrate National Day.

Guided by a team of scientist-volunteers from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the Science Centre Singapore, the 1,500 participants each dropped Mentos sweets into Cola bottles at the same time, setting off a spectacular and simultaneous string of Cola and Mentos explosions.

Organised in conjunction with SSF2010 that carries the theme "Know Why", the mass activity aims to encourage each participant to find out for themselves the science behind this unique experiment.

Leading this thrilling experiment was Associate Professor David Butler from NTU who explained the reaction behind this fizzy phenomenon and led the way in demonstrating how to carry it out. At today’s demonstration, Prof Butler also found out if using different flavours of Mentos sweets affected the results.
