Singapore is top Asian city for varsity education
Singapore has been ranked the 12th best city in the world and the top Asian city for students to pursue a university education, in a new listing by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
The Best Student Cities ranking by the education and career consultancy compares how attractive 98 cities are as destinations for both local and international students to pursue higher education.
The next best Asian city in the list was a tie between Tokyo and Hong Kong at number 19.
The list takes into account the quality and number of internationally ranked universities, alongside factors such as affordability, quality of living and the reputation of local universities among employers.
In addition, each city had to have a population of more than 250,000 and at least two institutions ranked in the QS world university listings.
QS looked at how those universities performed in its rankings last year. The National University of Singapore (NUS) came in at 28th place while the Nanyang Technological University was placed 58th last year.
Overall, Europe came up tops in the list in terms of quality of living and affordability, with tuition fees in top-ten cities Paris, Vienna, Zurich and Berlin averaging under US$1,000 (S$1,265) per year, compared to $30,000 in the US.
Twenty European cities make the top 50 compared to nine each from North America and Asia and four from Latin America.
In terms of quality of education, London claims the top score for the calibre of its leading universities, but Paris has a greater number of internationally ranked institutions alongside superior all-round scores.
QS Managing Director Nunzio Quacquarelli: "Going to university is about more than just selecting the most prestigious institution. When a broad range of factors are taken into account, cities in continental Europe, Australia and Asia offer distinct advantages for students."
