Student knocked down outside school

A netizen sent in this photo of an accident which happened early Friday morning to online citizen journalism photo, STOMP.

"Joanne" said she looked out of the window after hearing a loud sound and saw a girl in uniform lying in the middle of the road, outside Junyuan Primary School at Tampines Street 91.

The contributor reported that students and teachers immediately ran over to help.

Another netizen commented that the congested roads outside the primary school "was an accident waiting to happen".  Should schools do more to ensure the safety of students on the roads outside school?

School crossing patrol should be stationed at all schools to aid younger children with crossing the road. Children are precious protect them !

Is it not a universal law that vehicles should slow down when approaching
a school a residential area or a hospital area ?

Without enforcement by traffic police , merely just exisitng laws
to punish speed demons is not sufficient ..

Speed demons are plentiful around and pedestarians are at their mercy...

For a student to be knocked in front of the school? The driver must be either speeding, insane or simply ignorant. No sane driver would not look for children even though they could be jaywalking when driving near a school. If the driver is not speeding and alert, there would be ample time to stop even for a jaywalker.

There are always pedestrian crossing just outside the main school gate or at least within a 100m. Furthermore, I often see traffic wardens or teachers acting as traffic wardens outside the school gate during the mornings and afternoons. This is over and above the normal signs that warn you to drive slowly because you are in a school zone. So what happened in this case? What was the actual cause of failure?

aren't there already speed regulating strips on roads approaching schools?
