540 tuition centres in Singapore - and growing

Parents and students are spoilt for choice when it comes to tuition in Singapore.

According to a Shin Min Daily News report, a search through the Yellow Pages yielded about 540 different tuition agencies.

38 of them are situation in the Marine Parade area alone. That works out to be about three to four tuition centres for every 30 blocks of residential flats.

However, the proliferation of tuition centres has not made classes any cheaper. In fact, tuition classes have gotten more expensive, as demand is still high. Tuition fees for a primary one student these days can come up to $16 to $44 per hour.

Tutors are commanding higher fees as well. One teacher and part-time tutor revealed that three years ago, when he was still an undergraduate, he used to charge $20 per hour for each session. Now that he has got a teaching certificate and is currently teaching at a school, his fee has tripled, and he now charges $60 per hour.

Looks like MOE syllubus / teaching is insufficient after all. Parents still have to rely on external tuition class for their children. No wonder tuition centres are booming.

I feel so sorry for the children living in Singapore. There's no way out but to send them for tuition. The school teachers' schedule is so extremely tight, the chapters are only skim through; chapters after chapters. With working mothers, where do they find the extra time to go through each chapter? I pity the mothers too. The government encourages marriage and child birth but look at our education system. There's no such thing as enjoying the education process. Before you know it, time flies, and yet another exam around the corner. I'm tired.
