Tutor apologises for sounding "predator-like" in ad

He apologised for poorly-worded flyer in lengthy email; friend of his also stepped forward to defend him.

Tutor apologises for sounding

The home tutor who drew flak for stating in his advertisement that he was only interested in getting female JC students who are "not naughty" or "lazy" has apologised for his poorly-worded flyer, in an email to STOMP.

The advertisement for his services made netizens wonder if his intentions were less-than-honourable. Some wondered if he was looking for a girlfriend, instead of students.

Here is what the tutor said in his apology:

"As you all know, I am the author of this very, very unfortunate advert.

"First let me tell you that I'm not at all proud of what I've written, because I've done so with such little thought and my carelessness has got myself the fire I deserved.

"My sincere intention when I mentioned 'JC1 female students' was that I had thought (mistakenly) that female students would be easier to manage, given how I can sometimes lose patience with students (usually male) who do not seem to have the will to improve their grades. I now know how sexist that must've sounded and I am really sorry for that.

"At the same time, I had the belief that by learning the proper thought process as early as possible (not during the 'A' Level year itself) the student would see to much more improvement.

"Another thing that I now realise is how I should not have listed my achievements in such a 'in-your-face' a manner, because that truly looked quite pretentious and overboard. I sincerely apologise for that!
